What is Bike Ed?
Bike Ed is a joint Commonwealth, State and Territory initiative produced by Vic Roads in 1996 for the Federal Office of Road Safety. It is a National safe cycling resource for school aged children, which is recognised as the benchmark in bike safety education. It is a school-based program providing a practical means to increases a child's knowledge of road laws and safety issues when travelling by bike . It also helps develop skills needed to ride safely in traffic. The secondary school equivalent is tilted Cycle On.
Bike Ed is a practical course that improves basic safety, handling and riding skills and increases knowledge of road rules and cycling experiences in both simulated and on road environments. It also recognises the vital role parents can play and provides information to enable parents to complement school based learning out in the real world.
Safety Hint
Children under 10 years of age should not ride on roads in traffic without adult supervision. Children over 10 should not ride on roads in traffic without having completed a Bike Ed program first.
