- Engrave your bike with an identifying licence number
- Record the serial number of your bike
- Take a photograph and store it in a safe place
A security marking system such as a licence number engraved on the frame will not prevent your bike from being stolen. However if your bike does get stolen the chances of it being returned are greatly improved.
An effective method of identifying your bike is to engrave it with the letter of your home state e.g. (V) for Victoria followed by the licence number. If you don't have a licence number, maybe ask to use the licence number of an immediate family member.
If your bike is stolen and then recovered, Police will be able to return the bike by tracing your licence details.
Record your serial number.
Each bike is given a unique identification number. You will find it usually stamped on to the frame underneath the bottom bracket.
If you can locate it there, it may be stamped onto the chain stay disc hanger at the rear of the bike
Take a photo of your bike
Having a photograph of your bike will allow you to provide an accurate description to the police of the bike type, make, size colour and characteristics. It will also assist the police and you to identify it when recovered.
